LAND & SEA WORKSHOP

C. Kling Headshot 2026.jpeg

Instructor - Chris Kling

Chris Kling states, “Color sings to me and I try to use its harmony to evoke an emotional connection with others.” Chris has worked as a professional artist since earning her BFA in 1979 and has received awards, honors, and commissions for her landscapes and portraiture throughout the US. For years she has been exhibiting in national and international juried shows, and her popular paintings are widely collected. Chris fell in love with the juicy colors of oil paint long ago and expresses herself in this medium in a contemporary impressionistic manner through color, composition, value, and bold brushstrokes. She also enjoys participating as an invited artist in Plein Air Events and Competitions. Chris is a Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America, member of the Portrait Society of America, American Impressionist Society, NOAPS, Martin Artisans Guild, and Plein Air Palm Beach. Chris has artwork in several galleries in Florida, and you may see her work on Facebook at Chris Kling Studio and on her website.

My goal is to show you that with one approach you can paint any subject. Oil paints are preferred, but water-soluble oils, acrylic, or pastel are acceptable.

The first day we will start at 9 am with a short materials review followed by a demonstration. The first demonstration will be a landscape from a photo. After a brown bag lunch break, it is your time to paint! Please bring photos of your favorite landscape to work from.  It could even be a photo of one of your travels, but it is best to choose a landscape  photo that interests you or is meaningful personally to you in some way. I want to stress strongly - we will NOT work from iPhones!  They are much too small. Printed photos are best, and if you can print the photos as large as you are going to paint, even better! That is not always possible, but it can be helpful. I will show you during my demo methods to work from a photo. We will hold a group critique from 3:30 to 4:00pm.

On the second day I will do a demonstration of a seascape from a photograph. Please bring either a seascape, river, or lake photo that interests you or means something special to you. After the demo we will eat a brown bag lunch, and you will start to paint. From 3:30 to 4:00 pm we will have a group critique.

When you sign up, New Studio for the Visual Arts should send you my suggested Supply List. If you do not get one, please email me and I will send it to you. You need time to gather your supplies. You are welcome to use whatever materials you prefer and are most comfortable using (alternate paint and/or brushes), but these in the Supply List are my personal preferences.

I will be demonstrating with either a 9 x 12, 11 x 14, or 12 x 16 depending on the subject.

If you prefer to work on one subject for both days that is perfectly fine. Paint what interests you personally. If you have any questions, you are welcome to contact me at cbkling@bellsouth.net.
