ACRYLICS

Instructor - Patricia Lappin
Patricia Lappin opened her first studio in Fairfield, Connecticut in 1980. She taught privately and at the Greenwich Art Society in Greenwich, CT and was an elected artist member of the Silvermine Guild of Artist in Wilton, CT.
Patricia moved to Ft. Smith, Arkansas in 1996 and taught at the Center for Art Education and the Ft. Smith Art Center, now named the Ft. Smith Regional Art Museum (RAM). She also taught small groups weekly and workshops in the surrounding communities during the 20 years she resided in Arkansas.
Patricia has an extensive background in portraiture, landscape and abstract. Since moving to Florida, her personal work is changing, becoming more abstract and brighter in color.
BEYOND THE BRUSH ACRYLICS

Each class session will be a unique set of experimenting in paint application using alternate ways to apply paint and make marks on and into the painted surface. We will be exploring in depth each student’s unique visual voice. We will be looking for the heart of why we paint, why we are attracted to certain colors, and combinations of color, why we like certain shapes and lines. Although we will be working abstractly in these classes, the information learned will be useful in all styles of painting. It will even help students define their unique style.

PLEIN AIR - EVERY OTHER FRIDAY!

Experience the art and adventure of painting outdoors—where shifting light, changing weather, and the natural world become part of the creative process. In this supportive, skill-building course, Patricia Lappin shares her joy of painting on location and guides you through techniques that will help you feel confident and prepared in the field.
Patricia brings more than 15 years of plein air experience in both oil and watercolor, painting throughout Arkansas (2005–2015) and Florida (2016–2020). She has studied with several nationally known plein air artists, including Jason Sacran, Frank LaLumia, and Kevin Macpherson. During the pandemic, she expanded her practice in the studio, further refining her abstract acrylic work—experience that now enriches her teaching.
Important First Session
Students are strongly encouraged to attend the introductory in-studio session on January 30, held at The New Studio. During this essential kickoff class, Patricia will explain the plein air process, demonstrate her working approach, review materials, and answer your questions. This session will set you up for success when we move outdoors.
After the first meeting, all remaining sessions will be held on location, where you’ll practice sketching and painting the surrounding environment with Patricia’s guidance. All mediums are welcome. The class meets every other Friday, beginning January 30.
Patricia looks forward to supporting you on your plein air painting journey!
