Instructor - Caroline Duran

Caroline is a K-12 certified art educator, ceramic sculptor, watercolor artist, and Zazzle Pro designer.  At the University of Florida, her concentration was centered around conceptual figurative sculpture.  She has taught a variety of subjects to all secondary grade levels including ceramics, drawing, painting, and sculpture at IB magnet and independent college-preparatory schools. Caroline's students have been recognized by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers with Scholastic gold and regional awards and a national silver medal. Additionally, she has a 100% student pass rate on the Advanced Placement 3D Art and Design College Board portfolio review. Caroline has received the New Professional Award from the Florida Art Education Association and has raised over $3,000 to enhance her programs. Caroline believes the key to learning is to keep an open mind, continually strive for growth, and always maintain a helpful heart.

This course provides a foundational understanding of practicing, analyzing, and appreciating art, specifically designed for teens aged 15 and older. Students will explore the elements of art and principles of design, learning to create successful compositions through various mediums such as graphite pencil, soft pastel, and ink. By mastering these fundamentals, artists will better understand the visual nature of artwork, build confidence, and develop a personal voice and vision.

The course is structured around studies and projects, with a strong emphasis on drawing from observation. This approach prepares students for high school art courses, guiding them to develop and create a 2D portfolio that showcases their range, variety of media, and grasp of basic fundamentals. These portfolios can be used to gain entry into various schools, programs, higher-level academic courses, or pursuing personal artistic goals.

Required Materials:

  1. One Sketchbook with mixed-media paper

  2. Laptop/tablet required for every class to view references

  3. One pack of Micron pens in various tip sizes

  4. Soft Pastels

  5. One pack of artist graphite pencils

  6. Pastel Paper​

Monday Afternoons  4:30pm - 6:30pm

ADULT INTRODUCTION TO ACRYLIC PAINTING

This introductory course covers the essential skills of acrylic painting, focusing on composition, contour transfer, and color mixing. Suitable for beginners with no prior art experience, the course offers personalized instruction to guide each student from planning to execution.

Students will work primarily from reference photos to capture accurate color, value, and texture. Bringing a laptop, sketchbook, and printed references to class is encouraged.

By the end of the course, participants will gain confidence in their artistic abilities and a solid foundation in acrylic painting techniques.

 

Required Materials:

  1. One Sketchbook with mixed-media paper

  2. Laptop/tablet required every class to view references

  3. Printed reference photos

  4. Canvases as needed based on pace- 11 x 14 in. minimum suggested

  5. Soft pastel to transfer

  6. Printer

  7. Acrylic Paint Brushes

  8. Acrylic Paint- Liquitex suggested

  9. Palate

  10. Easel (optional)
