BOLD & LOOSE WATERCOLORS

Instructor -  Ellen Negley

My name is Ellen Negley and I was born and raised in Peoria, Illinois but now I live in Lake Worth, Florida. For me, watercolor is the perfect medium although I will agree at times it can be frustrating and very unforgiving. It’s elusive, unpredictable and has a mind of its own. One minute the colors are bold and electric and the next they’re delicate and transparent. Every time I step up to a blank piece of paper, I feel a rush of adrenaline, like stepping off a cliff and not knowing exactly where I’ll land. Maybe it’s that ever-present challenge that keeps me coming back for more. There is always more to learn.

Currently I participate in eight to ten art shows a year throughout Florida. It’s a great way to get feedback on my paintings and I enjoy talking to people about my painting process. I also teach several workshops a year and it feels very gratifying to help others explore the amazing world of watercolor painting.

Two New Dates – One-Day Workshops!

Join us for a vibrant and energetic watercolor workshop focused on bold, tropical subjects—perfect for exploring bright colors and playful compositions. These one-day sessions are designed to help artists break free from rigid outlines and embrace a looser, more expressive painting style.

Some watercolor experience is strongly suggested.

What to Expect:

  • Step-by-step demonstrations throughout the day

  • Discussions on tools, techniques, and materials

  • A focus on values, composition, and light sources

  • Encouragement to work boldly and freely with large brushes

  • An atmosphere of camaraderie, fun, and laughter

  • A group painting evaluation to wrap up the day

Workshop Goal:

The goal of this workshop is to help you feel more confident painting outside the lines and using big, expressive brushstrokes to create colorful, tropical-inspired artwork. You'll leave with a better understanding of how to use color and composition to bring your watercolors to life—plus, a finished piece you can be proud of!
